Do you have a home gym and find yourself asking if your barbells require service over time? Sportsmith has been asked and wants to share tips on how to care for your Olympic weight bars.

Cleaning the Bars

  • After each use: Wipe the barbell down with a dry cloth to remove sweat and moisture, which can cause rust. This will also remove dust and chalk that may accumulate on your bar due to sweat or moisture.
  • Weekly: Use a stiff nylon bristle brush to scrub the knurling and remove embedded chalk, dirt, and grime. Use a dry cloth to wipe down the entire bar.
    • If the barbell shaft is contaminated with oil stains, wipe it with diluted neutral detergent and then dry thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth to avoid detergent residue.

Maintenance of Rotating Components

  • Weekly: Check the bronze bushings or bearings at both ends of the barbell to ensure smooth rotation. If there is any jamming, add a small amount of special lubricating grease (avoid using machine oil as it easily attracts dust).
  • Avoid subjecting the barbell shaft to lateral impact to prevent deformation of the bearings or bronze bushings, which would affect rotation performance.

Rust Prevention

  • Weekly: After cleaning, apply special barbell oil or anti-rust oil to the knurling and rotating shaft parts to form a protective film, which is especially suitable for carbon steel barbell shafts.
    • Place a few drops of oil in the area where the sleeve meets the bar shaft.
    • Slowly spin the sleeve to distribute the oil evenly.
    • Wipe off any excess oil from the sleeves and shaft with a clean, dry rag.

Proper Storage

  • Store the barbell in a dry, well-ventilated environment, away from moisture, high temperature or direct sunlight.
  • Hang it on a dedicated barbell rack or place it properly to prevent the shaft from getting damp due to contact with the ground.

Daily Usage Precautions

  • Load and unload weight plates gently to avoid hitting the shaft and sleeves, which could cause sleeve deformation and collar failure.
